What is UNIX/LINUX and what does it do? Basic operations, etc?

Im curious about what UNIX/LINUX actually do. How do they function, what kinds of programs are they used for, and what makes them better to use over other programs? Just looking for an overview of the system(s) and maybe some websites to teach me about them if any are known.
