Are shar archives still so bad?

They're probably still a bad idea because not all distributions use the exact same version of the userland at the same time; some may be on the bleeding age and some may use an older version. Anyway, there are alternatives, like makeself.sh, that are somewhat more portable and are still in fairly wide use.
